MUAR • Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has played the loyal deputy for three years as his boss faced strong headwinds from the scandal at state-owned fund 1MDB, the sacking of top Umno officials and party desertions by formidable veterans including former premier Mahathir Mohamad and former finance minister Daim Zainuddin.

The results of today's election are expected to determine the next steps for Datuk Seri Zahid, as much as the fate of his boss, Prime Minister Najib Razak.
