Malaysian teenager arrested for posting insulting remarks against Johor royals on Facebook

KOTA TINGGI (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The police have arrested another teenager from Malaysia's state of Kelantan for the offence of posting vulgar and insulting remarks against the Johor royal institution on Facebook on Thursday (April 28).

Johor Police chief commissioner Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said that the 19-year-old youth was arrested at his house in Kampung Palas, Tumpat in Kelantan at around 3am.

He said that the unemployed youth was alleged to have wrote the remarks about the Johor royal family, specifically referring to Tunku Mahkota Johor on public Facebook page TRW Troll Story.

He said that the remarks was uploaded by a Facebook user by the name of Miyo Castelo in Kota Tinggi here on April 24.

"Investigations by our 24/7 task force managed to track down the Facebook account holder despite it being fake," he told reporters on Thursday.

Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd pointed out that the suspect could be charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to a year's jail, or both, upon conviction.

The suspect has been remanded for four days between April 28 and May 1 to assist with investigations.

He said that between January and April, the police have received 23 such cases with one being charged in court, while two other have been arrested.

He also urged members of the public not to post insulting comments against anybody including the Royal institutions and prominent figures.
