NIBONG TEBAL, Penang - The Malaysian police are investigating an incident in which a six-year-old girl tragically died after being trapped between the legs of a folding table while playing in her home in Penang.
South Seberang Perai OCPD Superintendent Chong Boo Khim said investigations revealed that the victim was found by her eldest brother.
The girl was found trapped between the legs of the folding table at 4.15pm on Jan 1. She was rushed to Parit Buntar Hospital by her mother.
“The victim was pronounced dead at about 12.30am on Jan 2,” Supt Chong said.
Supt Chong said the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001.
He added that a post-mortem conducted on the morning of Jan 2 determined that the cause of death was a cerebral oedema due to asphyxia.
“Investigations also found no criminal elements involved in the victim’s death,” he said, advising parents and guardians to ensure the safety of children at home and in public places.
In the incident, the victim, Nur Aqifah Humaira Abdullah, was reportedly playing alone at the back of a townhouse rented by her mother.
Her mother and siblings were inside the house and realised what had happened only after noticing the girl had gone quiet. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
