Jokowi's blusukan goes global

As he prepares to run for a second term, Indonesia's President is shifting his attention outwards, with a series of foreign policy initiatives centred on building up his country's influence as a regional power with extensive maritime interests.

JAKARTA • Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had heard so much about it that when he finally met Mr Joko Widodo in Jakarta in 2014, he had to ask: "What's a 'blusukan'?"

The then President-elect, better known as Jokowi, simply shrugged and said: "Blusukan just means to go on the ground and visit the people."
