The country's Department of Health has reported more than 50 injuries related to the use of firecrackers from last Monday to Saturday, with the numbers expected to grow as New Year celebrations draw near.

Filipinos traditionally welcome the New Year with revelry and firecrackers in the belief that loud noises drive away bad spirits and bring good luck.
