Jailed Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's father dies on Sunday morning

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The father of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim died at 1.45am on Sunday, said his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

In a Facebook post, Dr Wan Azizah said that the remains of her father-in-law Ibrahim Abdul Rahman will be taken to Lot 459, Pinggir Pelangi Pagi, Country Heights in Kajang.

According to the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, he is expected to be buried at Sg Ramal cemetery after Zuhur prayers.

She said that when Anwar's mother died, Anwar was also in prison.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison term after a five-man bench led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria found him guilty of having carnal intercourse with his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

On Wednesday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said Anwar was officially disqualified as Permatang Pauh MP as his petition for a royal pardon by his family on Feb 24 had been rejected.
