JAKARTA - Indonesia's capital Jakarta was on Monday (Oct 16) set to inaugurate Jakarta governor-elect Anies Baswedan at the Presidential State Palace.
Anies and deputy governor-elect Sandiaga Uno will be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday at 4pm (5pm Singapore).
Following their inauguration, the two will head to City Hall, where the governor's office is located, to sign a formal handover of office, The Jakarta Post reported.
They will also attend a celebration prepared and funded by volunteers.
Some 7,000 police and military officers will be deployed to guard the inauguration and the celebration at City Hall, according to Indonesia's Antara news agency.
"After the inauguration at the State Palace, the event continues at City Hall and the Jakarta Regional Council's office. There will also be a pesta rakyat (public fiesta) held at City Hall in the evening. We will secure all those events," Jakarta Police spokesman Argo Yuwono was quoted saying by the Kompas news agency.
An Anies-Sandiaga team spokesman told The Jakarta Post last week the celebration would feature a performance by the Soneta band, a dangdut group helmed by self-styled king of dangdut Rhoma Irama. Dangdut is a genre of Indonesian pop music which blends Indian, Malay and Arabic styles.
The celebration, which will be preceded by a Betawi welcoming procession, will also include a performance by disabled people.
Thirty virtual reality (VR) technology goggles will also be distributed to City Hall and 12 other places in Jakarta to allow the public to witness the inauguration live. Three 360-degree cameras installed in three spots at City Hall would record the inauguration and the footage would be projected into the VR devices.
Large-sized screens in some locations would also be set up to allow residents to watch the inauguration together.
About 3,000 portions of food and beverages will also be provided for free, the Anies-Sandiaga team has said.
The celebration is scheduled to continue into the night and end at about 8.30pm (9.30pm Singapore).
Heru Budi Hartono, a close aide of President Joko Widodo, said that Monday's ceremony would closely follow that of a presidential inauguration.
The current Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat ended his tenure on Sunday, four months after being inaugurated as the governor to replace Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. Basuki, better known by his nickname Ahok, was sentenced to two years in prison for blasphemy in May.
Anies and Sandiaga won the Jakarta gubernatorial election in April after competing with Ahok and Djarot in the run-off election.
