Indonesian President Joko Widodo faces tests of leadership in second term

With a Quran held above his head, Indonesian President Joko Widodo yesterday recited his oath of office to carry out his duties "as best and as justly" as he can, kicking off his second and final term under a barrage of crises.

Since winning the April 17 presidential poll with 55.5 per cent of the vote, the 58-year-old better known as Jokowi has had to face several tests of his leadership, from the deadly violence in Papua province to choking haze from forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan to student protests against a new corruption law in the capital.
