Tens of thousands of Malaysian protesters converged on areas surrounding Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to call for Prime Minister Najib Razak's resignation and for clean government. The Aug 29-30 rally organised by electoral reform group Bersih, on the eve of Malaysia's Independence Day on Aug 31, was prompted by alleged financial irregularities at state investor 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
