Heavy rains inundate parts of Jakarta

JAKARTA (JAKARTA POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Incessant rain has inundated parts of Jakarta since Thursday, mainly due to poor drainage system, officials said.

"The level of rivers is safe, but 36 locations (in Jakarta) are inundated," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) told Antara news agency on Friday.

He said the water volume of the Ciliwung, Karet, Krukut, Pesanggrahan, Angke, Cipinang and Sunter rivers, was normal despite the heavy rain.

However, parts of the capital city were inundated due to the poor drainage system, he said.

The Jakarta disaster mitigation office reported that North Jakarta had 25 flooded areas, East Jakarta three, South Jakarta three, West Jakarta four and Central Jakarta one.
