Malaysian girl, 5, dies after chest pierced by rotary sharpener shard

ALOR SETAR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A five-year-old girl died after she was hit in the chest by a shard from a shattered rotary sharpener in Kampung Tanjong Besar, Mukim Kubang Rotan here at about 5.30pm on Friday (Oct 27).

It is learnt that the father of the victim was sharpening the blades of a grass cutter, when the rotary sharpener shattered and pieces of it went flying.

The victim, Nuralia Syifa Murad, was pierced in her left chest by the shard and was rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

Her mechanic father, only identified as Murad, in his 40s, said that his daughter was still in the house when he began sharpening the blades of the grass cutter.

"I don't know when she came out from the house," said the distraught father.

"The broken piece hit my car first before hitting Nur Aliya," he said.

He also said that Nur Aliya was buried at the Muslim Cemetery of Kubang Rotan Mosque at 11.30am Saturday.

Murad and his wife have two other sons aged 12 and 18.
