In the centre of Perak's Teluk Intan town lies a century-old tower that resembles a Chinese pagoda. Intricate jade-green breeze blocks wrap around a disused water storage structure that tilts, ever so slightly, thanks to the soft soil beneath.

The beloved icon adorns the Facebook homepage of Mr Mah Siew Keong, 56, as the local-born Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition candidate tries to convince voters he understands their needs and is the best man to deliver the better education and facilities they need.
