World Animal Day, which is held on the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, is celebrated annually to raise awareness of animal welfare. It was initiated in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy, who wished to highlight the plight of endangered species.
