Couple found dead from suspected lightning strike

KUALA LUMPUR • A couple, believed to have been struck by lightning, was found dead in a park in a Puchong residential estate in Selangor on Sunday.

The married couple was believed to have been jogging when the incident occurred. It was not raining when the incident happened, an eyewitness said.

The couple was found sprawled on the ground, New Straits Times newspaper reported yesterday.

Police were alerted about the two bodies at 6pm yesterday, said Superintendent Lee Wai Leong, who is in charge of the Serdang district that encompasses Puchong.

He added that the man was identified as Mr Yee Boon Koo, 59.

The woman was identified as Ms Ooi Lee Chen, 57, The Star newspaper said.

The man was bleeding from the head.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel from a nearby medical centre.

Mr Lee said police found fragments of the pedestrian path in the park, believed to have been scorched by the lightning strike, at the scene, The Star said.

An unopened umbrella was found near the couple.

A witness, who declined to be named, told NST he heard a scream coming from the location and then saw the couple already on the ground.

"It wasn't raining yet when the incident happened," he said.
