SINGAPORE - Fireworks and a spectacular display of ethnic dance and song marked the start of Indonesia's biggest sporting event PON last Saturday (Oct 2) in Papua. PON is the acronym in Bahasa Indonesia for the national games.

President Joko Widodo joined in the celebrations, surprising spectators by taking part in a football match with local players and beating the tifa, a traditional goblet drum.
