PETALING JAYA – A 16-year-old female student at a high school in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, died on Oct 14 after being allegedly stabbed by a male student.

Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat of Petaling Jaya police said the incident occurred near a girls’ toilet at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Utama 4, during school hours at around 9.10am.

The suspect, a 14-year-old boy, is believed to have attacked and stabbed the victim. Police later seized two sharp weapons believed to have been used in the stabbing.

“Upon receiving a distress call, police personnel arrived at the scene at about 9.40am and confirmed that a murder had taken place,” AC Shamsudin told reporters at the scene. “The victim, a 16-year-old female student, was found dead in the school toilet.”

Police found no sign of bullying in the case, he said, adding that the motive for the killing is still being investigated.

AC Shamsudin said teachers who heard the victim’s screams tried to intervene, but she was already dead when they arrived.

Police officers were at the school to record statements from students and teachers, including friends and classmates of both the victim and the suspect.

“We will seek a remand order to facilitate investigations,” AC Shamsudin said.

He added that the case is being investigated as murder, and that further updates will be announced once the post-mortem is concluded.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that a special committee has been established to ensure that all aspects related to the case are investigated thoroughly, transparently and fairly.

In a statement on Oct 14, she said the case is currently under police investigation and confirmed that the suspect has been detained.

“The ministry will fully cooperate in the ongoing investigation,” she added.

“The ministry also extends its condolences to the family of the student who was fatally stabbed at the school today.

“May the family be granted strength and patience in facing this difficult time.”

Ms Fadhlina also said counsellors and guidance and counselling teachers have been mobilised to provide psychosocial support for the students, teachers and the entire school community affected by the incident. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
