A new multimillion-dollar technology park in Batam looks poised to transform the island into the Silicon Valley of Indonesia. Launched this week by Singapore and Indonesia, the Nongsa Digital Park has been hailed as a "digital bridge" between the two countries and the region to drive growth in Internet-based businesses.
For Singapore companies, Batam continues to be a popular spot to base their operations. It is only a 40-minute ferry ride away, offers cheaper labour and is free from natural disasters. Investors also enjoy import-duty exemptions because of its status as a free trade zone.
