KUALA LUMPUR • Red-faced officials in Malaysia's Parliament have explained - to chuckles around the country - how it got the name of a popular salad so wrong, after pictures of the menu card went viral.

The menu card for a dinner on Monday for senior parliamentary officials had read "Scissors Salad".

Deputy Parliament Speaker Ronald Kiandee wrote in jest on his Facebook account: "I was at the dinner... I can confirm that there were no scissors in the salad, but it was the normal 'Caesar salad'."

The Malaysian Parliament's communications team said the spelling was corrected before the dinner, and blamed the mistake on the caterers.

The menu card had another error - creme brulee was spelt Cream Brule.
