Open manhole on flooded Mumbai road

Civic workers standing watch near an uncovered manhole on a flooded road in Mumbai yesterday.

The city's commuter train services came to a halt and schools closed after a decade-high amount of daily rainfall in June flooded streets and forced office-goers to return home.

India's commercial hub received an average 24.6cm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8.30am yesterday, the highest level in the weather office data going back to June 2005, reported Bloomberg.

Almost 80 per cent of the nation received normal to heavier showers since June 1. Mumbai is likely to get heavy rain in the next 24 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department said yesterday.
