India faces peril of fake news

The perils of delivering a telecom revolution before basic governance, including efficient policing and education, have become chillingly apparent in India.

Fake messages on social media platforms suggesting widespread kidnapping of children have sent delirious vigilante mobs on a killing spree across rural reaches of the country. The spate of lynchings has claimed 27 lives in the past year, often in regions where no kidnappings have been reported.
