The Straits Times editor-in-chief Warren Fernandez (left) moderating a panel discussion on "Reshaping Globalisation" at the 9th Asian Leadership Conference, organised by South Korea's largest newspaper Chosun Ilbo. The two-day event draws experts and former government leaders from all over the world to discuss topics ranging from security to technology and economy. The Straits Times is a media partner for the event for the first time this year. During yesterday's session, Mr Fernandez asked former Prime Minister of the Netherlands Jan Peter Balkenende and Chairman of Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board Thomas Lembong to comment on United States President Donald Trump's recent Twitter message to "be cool, it will work out" when addressing the possibility of a US-China trade war. Mr Lembong said the world economy is in the "best shape in 10 years" and "can afford some friction". Mr Balkenende agreed, but added that action is required to "get away from trade war and political tension".
