HK 'missed golden opportunity' by disqualifying Wong

The Hong Kong government missed a golden opportunity to affirm its commitment to the "one country, two systems" principle by disqualifying political activist Joshua Wong from November's district council polls, some political watchers believe.

Dr Willy Lam from the Chinese University of Hong Kong told The Straits Times "it was certainly a missed opportunity" on the part of the Hong Kong government. "If they had accepted him as a candidate, this would have made the news internationally and would have been favourable to (Chief Executive) Carrie Lam and her team as it showed that they are sincere about promoting reconciliation and dialogue," said the long-time China observer.
