JAKARTA • Higher than expected enthusiasm among voters at Wednesday's presidential election in Indonesia has prompted its elections commission to make the optimistic forecast that turnout would exceed its target of 77.5 per cent.
This came as a surprise in a country where voter participation has been declining steadily, ahead of an election where abstention rates were expected to reach new highs.
