Questions have arisen in Hong Kong about the impact on the territory if the United States were to impose a ban on student visas for Chinese nationals.

White House hawks were reported to have encouraged President Donald Trump earlier this year to stop providing student visas to Chinese nationals as the debate on how to prevent Chinese espionage raged in Washington. The proposal was shelved over concerns about the economic and diplomatic impact.
