US opens de facto embassy in Taiwan

Washington's de facto embassy in Taiwan will be unveiled today.

The United States is sending an assistant secretary of state to attend the opening of the massive new complex for the American Institute of Taiwan, a move less likely to unnerve Beijing, which was concerned that higher-level American officials may show up.


Vietnam to pass cyber security law

Vietnamese lawmakers are expected to pass a draft cyber security law today that will force Internet giants, such as Facebook and Google, to store Vietnamese user data locally, which increases state surveillance powers.

The proposed law has raised fears among activists about tougher restrictions on the voicing of dissent online.


First national convention on myopia

The first National Myopia Convention in Singapore will be held today and tomorrow, bringing together 600 optometrists. Renowned speakers with expertise on myopia management from Australia, China and Taiwan will share their experience and best practices in managing their patients' myopia progression. The event is organised by French ophthalmic firm Essilor in partnership with the Singapore Optometric Association.
