A nail-biting video of a toddler taking his toy car out for a joy ride on a busy road went viral in China earlier this week.

The surveillance footage shows the young boy, who is about three years old, pushing his vehicle up the street against rush hour traffic. It occurred at around 8am in the city of Lishui, Zhejiang province, but is undated.

Vans, cars and motorcycles were seen swerving around the boy, but none actually stopped to help him.

Fortunately, a policeman, Mr Wu Feng, spotted the boy on his way to work. He rushed across the street to rescue him, picking him up and carrying his toy vehicle to safety.

"The boy was dangerously close to traffic, so I picked him up and took him onto the pavement. He told me he had become separated from his mum and was looking for her," Mr Wu told reporters.

The officer then located the child's mother and reunited her with her daredevil son. It is not apparent how she had lost track of him.
