On Wednesday, a passenger ship carrying more than 470 people, mostly high school students, sank off the country's southern coast, leaving at least two dead and about 290 others missing as of 4 pm. Here's a list of deadly accidents involving sunken ships in South Korea

Dec 15, 1970: Passenger liner Namyoung sinks off the coast of the southern city of Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, killing 323 people on board.

Oct 10, 1993: Passenger liner Seohae Ferry sinks off the southwestern coast of North Jeolla Province, killing 292.

May 12, 2007: South Korea's cargo ship Golden Rose goes down in China's east sea, killing six and leaving 10 others missing.

July 12, 2007: South Korea's cargo ship Orchid Sun sinks in waters near Oman, leaving 13 crew members missing.

Dec 25, 2007: Freighter Eastern Bright carrying chemicals sinks in rough waters off the coast of Yeosu, leaving 14 seamen missing.

March 10, 2009: Cargo ship Orchid Pia goes under after a collision with automobile carrier off the coast of Japan, leaving 16 sailors missing.

May 26, 2010: South Korea's warship Cheonan sinks near the western sea border with North Korea, killing 46 sailors on board.

April 2, 2010: A boat returning from naval search operations following the Cheonan incident near the western sea border goes down after colliding with a freighter, killing two crew members and leaving seven others missing.

Oct 15, 2013: A Panama-registered cargo ship sinks off South Korea's southeastern port city of Pohang, killing nine and leaving two others missing.

April 4, 2014: Mongolian-flagged cargo ship Grand Fortune 1 goes down off the coast of Yeosu, killing two North Korean crew members on board and leaving 11 others missing.

April 16, 2014: Ferry Sewol sinks, killing at least two and leaving some 290 others missing.
