SINGAPORE - With only two days to pack before their last-minute flight out of Shanghai in May, Ms Janice Yeo, 49, brought just three sets of clothes.

She wanted to leave room in her suitcase for her younger son's belongings. He had just graduated from high school in Shanghai and was due to enlist for national service in Singapore.
