The cracks in Hong Kong society will only widen, with more unrest on the horizon, unless the government and the anti-extradition protesters both compromise, observers said.

Dr Phil Chan from the Institute for Security and Development Policy said the distrust between people in Hong Kong and those in China, and between the city's residents and its government, can only exacerbate.
