A 39-year-old man was arrested on Aug 26 after three people were slashed at the house of an elderly couple in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, earlier in the day, police said.

Yuji Inoue was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the attack on a man in his 70s, a neighbour who rushed to help after hearing screams from the house.

Inoue admitted to injuring the man with a kitchen knife but denied intending to kill him, saying he instead intended to murder the woman in her 80s who lives there with her husband in his 90s, according to police.

An emergency call was received at around 10am from somebody saying: “I was slashed with a kitchen knife. I am bleeding from my wrist and back.”
