A university student in Japan was arrested on Sunday (Nov 6) for pushing his girlfriend off a train platform and onto the tracks at Yokohama's Hiyoshi station.

Yuki Ozawa, 22, a third-year student at Keio University, has been charged with the attempted murder of a 21-year-old woman from the same institution.

The couple had been among a group of students returning from a party and were arguing over whether to go for drinks, The Japan Times reported.

The woman was saved thanks to a passenger who informed station staff of the incident. They pressed the emergency button to stop an approaching express train, which came to a halt about 400m from her.

She suffered bruises on her knee from the fall.

Ozawa admitted to police that he had pushed the woman after losing his temper, but has denied any intention to kill her.
