HONG KONG - Since June 9, Hong Kong's embattled police force, once thought to be Asia's finest, have been tested to the hilt while caught between a hostile public and the city's pro-Beijing government.

Protests that start out peacefully have escalated into heated confrontations that stretch late into the night, and violent clashes have grown in scale with each march.
