Hundreds of CCTVs to be installed on South Korea's Jeju following spate of crimes by foreigners

JEJU - The provincial government of South Korea's resort island of Jeju said it will expand installation of surveillance cameras and beef up security measures amid a rising number of crimes committed by foreigners, reported Yonhap news agency.

The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province said on Tuesday (Oct 4) it will install a total of 472 additional CCTVs at 105 areas designated as "foreigner hot spots" by the end of next year, Yonhap said.

The plan, originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019, has been brought forward amid an increasing number of crimes committed by foreigners, especially from China, the report added.

In September, a Chinese man was arrested on charges of killing a South Korean woman who was praying at a Catholic church, said Yonhap.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office said it had indicted seven Chinese tourists on charges of beating up a South Korean restaurant owner last month.

The provincial government said it will install emergency bells at 90 public toilets, as well as 260 CCTVs and 41 bells in 62 child protection zones on the island.

The authorities also face growing calls to toughen border controls and review the existing visa waiver programme.
