TAIPEI - For Mr Lam Wing-kee, the Hong Kong bookstore owner detained by Chinese authorities for eight months, it's just a matter of time before political freedom in the former British colony is lost.

Retaining Hong Kong's position as a financial centre, with the dual function of tapping international capital markets and acting as a model to Taiwan to woo it back into the fold comes second for Beijing where the ultimate aim is to bring both under its control.
