What began as small, isolated rallies in March against a contentious extradition Bill escalated in June when a million, then two million, people took to the streets against it.
On June 12, the day of the Bill's second reading, thousands surrounded the Legislative Council (LegCo) building to prevent lawmakers from sitting. This would prove a turning point for what had been largely peaceful protests. The authorities say some in the crowd threw projectiles at officers, though the police's use of tear gas and rubber bullets also sparked accusations of excessive force.
