Tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds. All before 8am on a Monday morning. Activists had called for a citywide strike yesterday and started even before dawn, building barricades and disrupting the city's metro system.

Violence escalated throughout the day, with a petrol bomb tossed into a train carriage, a man set on fire and tear gas fired in the business district during lunch hour.
