A heroic bus driver in central China's Hubei province has received plaudits after stopping his bus safely despite suffering from head injuries in a freak accident.

While the bus was travelling on an expressway from Yichang to Dangyang on Monday (July 9), a sheet of metal came flying towards it, and hit the driverWang Fei in the face after smashing through the windscreen, reported Chutian Metropolis Daily.

It is unclear why a stray metal sheet was on the road.

Mr Wang, 36, calmly steered the bus to a complete stop on the Hurong Expressway, ensuring the safety of his 16 passengers.

In camera footage taken from within the bus, Mr Wang was seen hunched over the steering wheel after bringing the bus to a stop.

The Chutian Metropolis Daily also reported that Mr Wang guided the passengers off the bus, and instructed them to stand together, a safe distance away from the traffic.

He suffered a mild concussion, as well as bruises to his arms and lips.

The driver, an employee of Hubei Yichang Transport Company, was lauded by local police, who said that his actions prevented a worse accident from occurring.
