BEIJING (REUTERS) - China's President Xi Jinping will attend the G-20 summit in Japan this week, state-run Xinhua news agency said on Sunday (June 23), giving the first official confirmation of his attendance at a gathering where he is expected to meet US President Donald Trump.
The Group of 20 summit will be held in the city of Osaka on June 27 to 29. Xinhua did not give further details.
Mr Xi's meeting with Mr Trump could be pivotal in getting negotiations back on track to de-escalate the US-China trade war, which have led the two nations to slap tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of each other’s goods.
Trade talks between the world’s two largest economies collapsed last month, with Mr Trump accusing China of watering down its commitments. Mr Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods and has threatened even more.
Mr Trump and Mr Xi spoke by phone last Tuesday about the summit and formally agreed to meet to talk about the tensions.
