To the dismay of doomsayers and detractors, the resilient People's Republic of China turned 70 on Tuesday, having averted collapse and bouncing back time and again.

China has weathered crisis after crisis in the past seven decades and transformed the world's most populous nation from an economic backwater into a powerhouse.
