BEIJING - China stepped up its control of religion this month, with new regulations that in effect ban individuals or organisations not sanctioned by the state from sending religious content over the Internet.
The rules, which took effect on March 1, have had a chilling effect on religious expression. Religious groups have moved away from Chinese social media platforms to avoid running afoul of the law, while religious adherents have decried what they see as its indiscriminate impact.
