Japan yesterday commemorated the eighth anniversary of a massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated its north-eastern coast and triggered a nuclear disaster. Silent prayers were held amid tearful tributes at a ceremony to mark the tragedy that left about 18,500 people dead or missing.

The recovery of the Ethiopian Airlines jet's black boxes will allow investigators to piece together what caused the Boeing 737 Max 8 to crash on Sunday, killing all 157 on board, and whether similar factors led to the Lion Air tragedy last October. Several countries yesterday decided to ground their fleet of these planes.
