Do opinion polls work? Jury's still out

In Australia, the governing right-of-centre Liberal Party won re-election - a result so contrary to scores of previous polls, the country's Prime Minister Scott Morrison was moved to declare he had "always believed in miracles".

In India, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party had been tipped to return for another five-year term with a bare majority, according to exit polls just days prior to official results last week. Instead, the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi won in a landslide - the first time any prime minister in India had won back-to-back majorities in nearly 50 years.
