Pine Gap facility said to be one of the US' most important intelligence-collection sites

Just south of the town of Alice Springs in the centre of Australia, a quiet road in the outback ends abruptly, with a fence and security guards barring entry to the nation's most illustrious spy base.

There is little to indicate the activities within, which involve monitoring signals and eavesdropping on targets around the world.
