Surging property values and a change in drinking and social habits saw many old pubs being refurbished into residential blocks, offices, shops and restaurants

In the older parts of Australian cities, it is impossible to walk far without passing the characteristic awnings and facade of a local street-corner pub.

These days, however, the buildings do not necessarily house drinkers and a well-stocked bar.
