SYDNEY - Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been criticised for backing new gas and coal exploration despite his pledge to adopt ambitious measures to tackle climate change.

The election of Mr Albanese's Labor party in May ended nine years of rule by Liberal-National coalition governments, during which moves to reduce Australia's carbon emissions and to promote renewable energy had been unwound.
