Just days ago, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison returned from his warm meetings in the United States with President Donald Trump, who heaped praise on him and treated him to a rare state dinner at the White House.

But the trip is now mired in controversy after it emerged this week that Mr Morrison has been dragged into the bitter political feud in Washington over Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
