Dear ST reader,
For the first time since dropping his reelection bid, US President Joe Biden addressed the nation on July 24 US time, using the age issue to boost his preferred successor, Vice-President Kamala Harris.
The high point of Mr Biden’s speech was when he spoke of passing the torch to a new generation, US bureau chief Bhagyashree Garekar cited Professor Sean Wilentz as saying. Prof Wilentz also said he expected Ms Harris to push on with Mr Biden’s framing of the election as a battle for democracy.
Chinese analysts told The Straits Times correspondents that Beijing would probably view the latest turn of events - with Ms Harris replacing Mr Biden as the Democratic candidate in the presidential race - favourably.
Another heartening development for China was the fact that the July 19 global tech outage left China unscathed, due to its limited exposure to US-based cyber-security firm CrowdStrike, whose faulty software update caused some 8.5 million Microsoft Windows devices to crash worldwide.
Ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, China Bureau Chief Tan Dawn Wei travelled to Xinjiang to examine the region’s quest for Olympic boxing fame. Separately, ST’s foreign correspondents chart the journey of Olympic athletes from the South-east Asian region.
Over cups of Australian flat white and kopi-c siu dai, Senior Columnist Lin Suling muses about whether to move overseas for good coffee and a different kind of life.
