Vivian on official visit to China from Sunday

BEIJING • Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan will pay an official visit to China from Sunday to Monday at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Xinhua news quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying as saying yesterday.

Dr Balakrishnan last visited China in February, when he met Mr Wang. The two also met at the World Economic Forum in the resort town of Davos in Switzerland in January.

Five workers in Japan exposed to radiation

TOKYO • Japan's nuclear energy agency said yesterday that five employees have been exposed to dangerously high levels of radiation after a bag containing plutonium broke apart during a routine inspection.

There was no radiation leak outside the building, it added. Japan's atomic watchdog slammed what it described as unheard-of levels of exposure.
