US defence secretary on 3-day visit to India

GOA (India) • US Defence Secretary Ash Carter began a three-day visit to India yesterday, seeking to advance a relatively new defence relationship with a country Washington sees as a counterweight to the growing power of China. He has said that "exciting new projects" will be discussed during his talks with Indian leaders.


6.6-magnitude temblor strikes South Asia

KABUL • An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck South Asia yesterday, shaking buildings in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, witnesses and the US Geological Survey said. Initial reports said at least two people were killed and 10 injured in Pakistan.

Taiwanese rally in support of death penalty

TAIPEI • Hundreds rallied yesterday to back keeping the death penalty, after the beheading of a four-year-old girl on March 28 . Some politicians and rights groups have called for the abolition of the death penalty, but various opinion surveys show majority support for it.
