Princess' engagement to be official on July 8

TOKYO • Japan's Imperial Household Agency has said it will officially announce the engagement of Princess Mako, 25, the first grandchild of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, to a university classmate on July 8, Kyodo news agency reported on Monday.

The fiance-to-be, Mr Kei Komuro, 25, was a classmate of the princess at International Christian University in Tokyo.

Suicides up at Thai camp for Myanmar refugees

LONDON • The number of recorded suicides and attempted suicides has soared at Thailand's largest camp for refugees from Myanmar, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said.

Twenty-eight refugees in Mae La camp have killed themselves and 66 have attempted suicide in the last two years, more than three times the global suicide rate, according to an IOM study.

Mae La is the largest of nine refugee camps on the Thai-Myanmar border.


5-year-old girl with rare brain condition dies

AGARTALA • An Indian girl who made international headlines when a rare condition caused her head to swell to more than twice the normal size has died, days before she was to undergo corrective surgery.

The family of Roona Begum, five, said she died on Sunday after complaining of breathlessness. She was born with hydrocephalus that causes cerebrospinal fluid to build up in the brain.
